World without knowledge and safety without information makes no sense. Cultivate yourself with information and knowledge. A Key to be safe from Cyber Crime.
The word Social engineering is must be familiar with many of us.
We may also know what it means. The word itself can describe its
meaning. Here, the word social describes your social identity,
your public relations, friends, group, and community, etc. and
Engineering is to design and build something. Social Engineering
is all about gathering the publicly available information of any
individual or organization and use that information for fraudulent
The term Social Engineering is very common amongst Cyber Criminal. It is the first step for any crime which a Criminal or a Fraudster will carry out. Many of us would have heard term Social Engineering during our early College days or our Professional Journey but what if I told you that you knew it and might be doing it before you came to know about the Social Engineering term and you use it in your routine life. Yes, we all have been doing social engineering in our routine life. For example: if we want to purchase any product from the market, we do a little research before purchasing it. We like to know about the product before we buy it, isn't it right? Yes, it is. Social Engineering is also a kind of research to collect information. We all do it in our daily life, it's just that everyone's objective is different.
But in the digital world where information is a very valuable asset for any individual or organization, the word Social Engineering becomes a part of Cyber-attack. Cyber criminal's first step for conducting any cyber-crime is Social Engineering. This helps them to understand their victims and plan the attack accordingly. Now, we may wonder about how they can gather such information which would provide benefit to them. Most of the time, such information is provided by the victim itself. For example, you are on a family vacation and you use a social media website. Many people post pictures and their status including travel status. Now thieves use the advantage of the information shared by you and plan a house theft at your residence.
We use different social media platforms where our personal information is publicly visible. We also use different apps in our smartphones where we provide our personal information and different access to the app. Many messaging platforms are used for performing fraud attacks by promoting different greedy deals or offers. The Fraudsters use different platforms to gather victim's information and to perform a Cyber Crime like Social media websites, Mobile Applications, Messaging Applications, SMS, phone calls, etc.
Majority of Frauds and Cyber-crimes can be avoided or stopped if we are aware of Cyber Threats and Information Confidentiality. Being Cyber-Aware helps us to stay secure and stay protected. Government is also running a different campaign to spread Cyber Awareness. As a CyberNGO, we conduct different campaign and activities for spreading Cyber Awareness. As a Member of CyberNGO, I would like to share few safety tips which could be helpful. It is always advised not to share your birth date, address, age, card details, OTP and other personal information to anyone. We also must maintain integrity and confidentiality of the information of our personal and professional life.
